NYC GF-Friendly Eatery List

Below is the most recent NYC GF-Friendly Eatery List, arranged by neighborhood and borough. Listings are for places I have heard of, from businesses or diners; the venues with asterisks(*) are places where I've personally eaten safely. (If you'd care to make similar notes and share, please do so in comments below!)

Please note: This is NOT a guaranteed safe list! Exercise your usual GF caution before dining, i.e. call ahead, ask about their processes, etc.** I hope it helps get you out in the world more often, enjoying safe social eating with the people in your life. So without further ado:

67 Burger (In Park Slope and Fort Greene.) : Buns are cooked on a separate grill from meats and tofu (though alongside veggie burgers, so those aren't safe). No GF burger buns as of yet. Salads are GF.
Sweet Wolf's: Gluten-free mac & cheese and other dishes can be made GF. A note on the menu states that most dishes are made with rice flour - love it!
Scottadino: Beautiful little Italian restaurant offering GF pasta. (Have you eaten there safely? I'd be curious to know.)
Ghenet:  Ethiopian food, with many dishes naturally gluten-free. While the injera bread they serve contains some wheat, with a few days notice, Ghenet will prepare the more traditional teff-only injera, which is GF.

**Personally, I would not be able to eat at a number of the venues above, because I am so very sensitive to even small amounts of gluten. I am listing them anyway because I know there are people who are much less sensitive and would likely choose to dine at many of these eateries.

  1. WOW. Thank you for this! Bookmarking. (Though I'm being extra careful here at the outset of my GFD, too.)

  2. Quite welcome! Totally understand re: being extra careful. Heck, I didn't really eat out for the 1st 3 years after *my* dx! But there are so many more safe options now. Are you in Brooklyn/NYC? If so, I highly recommend Sun in Bloom as an especially safe option - owner/chef is GF and they are incredibly organized/careful about preventing cross-contamination.

  4. Which ones are tough for you to eat at or do you not trust? I am also very gluten sensitive and when I went to Denver, I was suprised that they new there are varying degrees of gluten sensitivity.

May I ask for everyone's benefit that you mark your blog posts so we can benefit? Thanks!

  5. I hear what you're saying, but for now I'm sticking with only listing the ones where I've eaten successfully. May change that stance in the future, but it's what feels right now.
